Marcelo Ebrard, head of the Federal District government, yesterday led a ceremony to
commemorate those who lost their lives in the atomic bomb explosions in the cities of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

A survivor tells his story

During the event, Yasuaki Yamashita recounted what happened to him on the 9th of August 1945
At the age of just six, he had a lucky escape. One of the American bombs launched against
Japan at the near end of the Second World War fell 2.5 kilometers from his home in the city
of Nagasaki.
Today, 65 years on from that event, Yamashita remembers in detail that moment which has
remained imprinted on his memory his whole life.

“My mother took my hand and we went into the kitchen, in that moment there was such a strong flash – understand that this was thousands of lightening flashes at the same time – and
a huge noise. My mother threw me to the ground and covered me with her body, we heard noises and felt that things were flying around, and then a sudden silence.

“In the night, we could see the city in flames, for days and days we had nothing to eat,
we were dying of hunger. My mother took us to a relative living in the country, there was
something to eat there; we walked near the epicentre and what we saw was worse then hell,
I think it is impossible to describe the living nightmare there”, he recounted during
a remembrance ceremony organised by the Federal District Government at Altar de la Patria in Bosque de Chapultepec.

He noted that the bomb which fell on Nagasaki had originally been destined for the city of
Kokura, where arms were being made, but that visibility had been bad.
