「近隣を信頼すれば、核兵器はいらない」

コーチン：
「隣接する国々が相互に信頼していれば、核兵器はいらない。信頼していなければいけない。」と今週月曜日に発言したのは広島のヒバクシャ佐藤良生（さとうよしお）さんだ。

「インドとパキスタンはお互いに信頼をしていないから核兵器を保持しているのだ。」聖テレサ大学の学生との交流会で語った。

これは、他の国が核兵器を保持していることに対しての意見を求められた際の答えだった。

79歳になるヒバクシャの佐藤さんは、日本の国際NGOピースボート第70回地球一周の船旅でコーチンを訪れた。
この船旅に参加しているもう一人のヒバクシャ出口輝夫（イデグチテルオ）さんは悪天候のため船の入港が送れ、船に留まった。

爆心地から1キロしか離れていないところで被爆した佐藤さんは、平和のメッセージを広めるためにできるだけ多くの友だちや家族に彼の経験したことを話して欲しいと学生に話した。

原爆の恐ろしさを表現するために自分で描いた絵画も見せた。

胃に腫瘍ができるなど、放射能の影響から病気を経験し、1971年には内臓の半分を手術で摘出した。それでも、当時の記憶や思いを表現できるようになったのは、1945年8月6日の悲劇から55年たってからだった。

初めてインドを訪れたが、道で人々が笑顔をみせてくれることを嬉しく思った。そして、マーシー・ウィリアムズ市長への表敬訪問もした。

医者であったこともあり、核兵器の恐ろしい被害に関する意識を高めることに使命を感じている。

Trust thy neighbour, you need no nukes’

KOCHI: Nuclear weapons are unnecessary if nations trust each other. Neighbours should trust each other, Hiroshima atomic bombing survivor Yoshio Sato said here on Monday.

India and Pakistan have nuclear weapons because they do not trust each other, he said while interacting with the students of St Teresa’s College here.

He made the remark while replying to a query as to the options in front of a government when other countries possessed nuclear weapons.

The 79yearold Hibakusha had arrived here as a part of the Japanese NGO Peace Boat’s 70th global voyage for peace. The other Hibakusha on the voyage, Teruo Ideguchi, who had visited Kochi in 2008, chose to remain on the ship SS Oceanic after its arrival was delayed owing to the rough seas.

Sato, exposed to the atomic bomb at just one kilometre away from ground zero, urged the students to share his experiences with their friends and relatives to help spread the message of peace to as many people as possible.

He also displayed paintings of his depicting the horrors of the atomic bombings.

Having suffered serious illnesses from radiation, including a tumour in the stomach, which led to half of the organ being surgically removed in 1971, Sato managed to give expression to his memories and emotions only 55 years after the carnage of August 6,1945.

On his first visit to India, Sato was pleased that the local people smiled back at him as he walked along the streets. He also paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Mercy Williams.

Since his retirement as a chemist, he has taken up as his mission spreading awareness about the illeffects of nuclear weapons.
